Getting a suntan! 04/10/2011
What glorious weather ! Good enough to start my arms going a bit pink in the sunshine today. And good enough for my peas to come out from under their cloche and have a bit of netting in the hope they head for the sky quickly. Here they are below, accompained by some newly erected bean poles (new potatoes still under their black plastic in the background) and some radish seedlings that are well on their way to becoming crisp and crunchy radishes......mmm. Other jobs today were sowing some lettuce, broccolli, watercress and cauliflower seeds in the seed bed. Never tried growing watercress before - packet says 'keep moist' (clue is in the title I guess) so I planted them near the water trough so they should get a few spills as well as their allocation. I also transplanted some leeks that had overwintered in the seed bed into a bigger bed that had loads of manure dug into it in the Autumn. They should be very happy there, once they've got over the sulks of having been moved (the tip for transplanting leeks is to move them when they are about the width of a pencil, make a hole in the ground with a dibber and pop the leek in, then fill the hole with water rather than backfilling with soil - the water washes in enough soil and leaves a nice hole for the leek to grow into). Add Comment A few sunny days means that everything is starting to get a move on. My pea seedlings are enjoying the sunshine, underneath their blanket of cloche, broad beans are looking good under their wirey protection from the birds and the blossom on the plums trees is just glorious. Lets hope its not too frosty over the next few days! |
